The Complete Gold Loan Guide (2026): Everything You Need to Know Before You Pledge

Gold is more than an ornament in an Indian household — it is the family’s quiet emergency fund, a wedding promise, a retirement cushion. A gold loan simply lets that gold work while it sleeps: you pledge your jewellery, receive cash in return, and get your gold back the moment you repay.

This guide walks you through everything — what a gold loan is, how much you can borrow, what it costs, what happens if you default, and the questions you should ask before you pledge. No jargon, no fine print — just the honest picture.

What is a gold loan?

A gold loan is a secured loan against your gold jewellery or coins. The lender values your gold, holds it safely for the tenure of the loan, and gives you cash — usually disbursed within minutes to a few hours. When you repay the principal and interest, your gold is returned exactly as it was.

Because the loan is fully secured by the gold, lenders face very low risk. That is why gold loans are faster to approve, cheaper than unsecured loans, and available with minimal paperwork — often just your PAN and Aadhaar card.

How much can you borrow against your gold?

The amount depends on two things:

The Reserve Bank of India caps gold loan LTV at 75% for banks and NBFCs. So if your gold is worth ₹1 lakh at today’s rate, the maximum you can borrow is officially ₹75,000 — though a lender may offer less based on policy and your profile. You can learn how to squeeze the most out of your LTV in our complete LTV explainer.

Documents needed: surprisingly little

For most gold loans with NBFCs, two documents are enough:

No income proof, no bank statements, no property records, no employment letter. Your gold itself is the security, which is exactly why the process is so fast. See the full document list in our gold loan documents guide.

Interest rates and fees: read the three lines

Gold loan interest rates typically range from 9% to 24% per annum depending on the lender, the loan scheme and your repayment frequency. Be sure to compare the effective rate, not just the advertised headline rate, and check for:

Our hidden charges guide lists every fee to ask about before signing.

How long is the tenure and how does repayment work?

Gold loans typically run for up to 12 months, with interest payable monthly and principal at maturity. Most lenders offer flexibility:

At MAG Finserv, we offer no-foreclosure-charge part payment and part release — so you can retrieve some of your gold against a part payment without closing the whole loan.

What happens if you cannot repay?

This is the question everyone is afraid to ask. Here is the honest answer: lenders do not want your gold — they want their money back with interest. The sequence is almost always:

  1. A reminder period and a call from the branch;
  2. Options like renewal, extension or part payment to get you back on track;
  3. Only after prolonged default — usually months — does the lender exercise the right to auction the pledged gold, at which point any excess sale proceeds beyond the dues belong to you.

RBI guidelines require lenders to sell at a transparent auction and return the surplus. Still, the golden rule is simple: borrow what your gold can cover comfortably, and talk to the branch the moment you foresee a problem — silence is the only mistake that compounds.

Gold loan vs selling your gold

If you sell your gold, you get cash and never see the gold again — and you lose the appreciation of gold prices over the coming years. With a gold loan, you pay interest but your asset keeps working for you. For most short-term needs, the loan is mathematically the better choice. We compare them thoroughly in gold loan vs selling your gold.

Making the decision

Ask your lender these six questions before pledging:

  1. What LTV am I getting, and on what valuation basis?
  2. What is the effective annual rate, not the advertised rate?
  3. Are there valuation, processing or hidden charges?
  4. Can I do part payments and part releases without penalties?
  5. Is there a foreclosure charge if I repay early?
  6. Where is my gold stored, and is it insured?

If you get straight answers to all six, you have found a lender worth trusting. If you would like to test us with those very questions, visit any of our 50+ branches — or start a gold loan application and get a call back in minutes.
